You can add facts (like address, nationality, and title) and events (like birthdate and marriage dates) to your family tree on Ancestry® from a person's profile page.
Adding facts and events
- From your tree, click on the person you want to add facts or events for.
- In the opened card, click Profile.
- On the Facts tab of their profile page, in the Timeline column, click + Add.
- Select a fact or event type from the available options or choose "Custom Event" to create your own.
- Enter information about the fact or event and click Add.
If it's a duplicate event (like a second birthdate), both events will be visible in their facts or events.
- The fact or event entered first will be shown on your family tree by default.
- To change which one gets displayed, click the "Preferred" box next to the fact or event you want to show.
- To add a source or photo to the fact or event you just added, hover over it and click Edit.
- On the left side, click Attach media or Attach source and then Upload media or attach source citations.
Adding a record or a photo to a source
- From the profile page of someone in your tree, click the Facts tab.
- In the Sources column, hover over a source and click the View button that appears.
- Click Media on the left.
- If the media file is already attached to the person, click the + next to it. To add new media, click Add media to source.
- If you're uploading media, drag the file onto the page or click Choose files.
Removing a fact or event
It's not currently possible to combine duplicate facts or events, so if you have duplicates, add all the information from one fact or event to the other, then delete the first one.
- From the profile page of someone in your tree, click the Facts tab.
- In the Timeline column, hover over a fact and click the Edit button that appears. If you hover over a fact and a button doesn’t appear, the fact is coming from a family member. Go to that family member's profile page to edit the fact. For example, if the fact is "Death of Brother Joseph Aranda," go to Joseph Aranda's profile page to change or delete the fact. You can also turn off facts that appear about family members by clicking Filter in the Timeline column and unselect Family events.
- In the bottom-right corner of the opened window, click Delete.
- To confirm, click Delete.
Troubleshooting
Adding, editing, or deleting a fact doesn't work, or the menu is blank
Clear your cache and cookies, then try again.
Merging facts or events
The best way to handle duplicate facts or events is to add information from one fact or event to the other, then delete the first one. It's not currently possible to merge facts or events.
No Edit button on a fact
If you hover over a fact and a button doesn’t appear, the fact is coming from a family member. Go to that family member's profile page to edit the fact, or turn off family events by clicking Filter in the Timeline column and unselect Family events.
